I just received the following e-mail from Transportation Alternatives and thought it would be good info to share.
Greetings Bike Month NYC Team!
Transportation Alternatives has been working hard to organize the 2010 Bike Month NYC Campaign, and we thank you for all of your help. This year, we had the pleasure of working with NYC & Co. and the New York City Department of Transportation in developing many of the details. They're great partners. We hope you love what we've done!
The Bike Month NYC calendar is online now, but you can make last minute changes, so if your event's details are sketchy, be sure make your changes soon. Or if you forgot to add your event, please take this moment to register at BikeMonthNYC.org.
To show our gratitude for all of your help and hard work, we'd like to invite you to the official 2010 Bike Month NYC Launch Party on May 1st from 1-5 pm at Brooklyn Bridge Park (Pier 1). We're throwing it in collaboration with the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation, the Department of Transportation, Recycle-a-Bicycle, Bike New York, the New York Police Department and T.A.'s volunteer committees, so it's sure to be an awesome event, as well as an opportunity to hang out with great people.
Some of the activities we have lined up for the day include:
1. Guided rides from each borough by T.A. volunteer committees. Check out locations and start times here
2. Learn to Ride for Kids, by Bike New York (register your child here)
3. NYC Cycle Maps by the Department of Transportation
4. Light bike repair by Recycle-a-Bicycle
5. Bike registration by the NYPD
6. Biking Rules PSA 2009 Film Festival Screening by Transportation Alternatives
This is also your chance to pick up Bike Month NYC Calendars, Biking Rules handbooks and the new NYC Cycling Map for your organization or for yourself.
If you can't join us for the party, you can request a calendar at BikeMonthNYC.org or if you need more than 10, swing by our office located at 127 West 26th Street, Suite 1002.
Best of luck with your event and bike often!

One of my Favorite Things
Do you ever wander around the city parks and look at the dedications on park benches?
Well, if you don't, you should. I find it to be one of the most inspirational and relaxing activities in this city. And because I believe in sharing inspiration here are a few of my favorites:
Well, if you don't, you should. I find it to be one of the most inspirational and relaxing activities in this city. And because I believe in sharing inspiration here are a few of my favorites:
"Enjoy a moment of peace- The Quinns"
"Angie, Have I asked you to marry me yet today? Love, Mike"
This one is just so sweet!
"With gratitude
Glorious, glorious Central Park
Lovely oasis of beauty and inspiration
Glorious, glorious Central Park
Lovely oasis of beauty and inspiration
A photographer's delight - Joan Wolfson"
Couldn't agree more with this one.
"Sit. Relax. Take a deep breath. Enjoy the Day. Linda C. Kobefitsch"
"When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive: to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.- Marcus Aurelius From the family of John R. Fernbach"
I love these little phrases. They always remind me to live each day to the fullest, especially those benches that are dedicated to the memory of someone who loved the city parks. I hope you are inspired to enjoy your surroundings and take a moment each day to to be thankful for the little things in life.
May is Bike Month in NYC
Take note: May is Bike Month in New York, a month long celebration of cycling.
Bike Month NYC has not posted any events yet but I contacted Transportation Alternatives and their response to my e-mail was:
Additionally, the organization's "bike tips" are pretty good. I was pleased to see that they posted bicycling laws, which included a reminder to all to not only wear a helmet but also not to ride on the sidewalks if you are over the age of 12 and not to wear headphones. One of my pet-peeves in this city is that so many people ride on the side-walks and I have seen dogs and people hit because the bike rider was unable to stop or they were wearing headphones and not paying attention. So while I try to keep this blog cheery and enthusiastic, I am also enthusiastic about personal safety and the safety of those around you... so please remember to wear a helmet, stay off the sidewalks and park foot paths and don't ride with headphones.
And back to our regularly scheduled programing:
Bike Month NYC posted links on their web-site to NYC Century Bike Tour's bike rental page (very helpful if, like me, you do not keep your bike in town but occasionally find yourself wanting to feel the wind on your face and go for a ride).
And on a related note, please note that the NYC Century Tour event will take place on September 12, 2010 and registration is now open.
How do you plan on celebrating Bike Month??

Two Great Articles on City Parks
I was very pleased to hear through the New York Times that the City will be taking control of Governor's Island. I know Leslie Koch, President of the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation, and have heard her speak at a number of events. She has really been a driving force behind the recent revitalization the park and I think the City's control of the Island will only further the process.
According to the NY Times:
The second article is a lovely tribute to Tupper Thomas, who recently announced her retirement, and her role in the rejuvenation of Prospect Park. To read more: Returning Prospect Park to the People.
According to the NY Times:

"As part of the announcement, the city unveiled a new plan to continue to redevelop much of the island as a public park, adding amenities, green space and making improvements to the 2.2-mile promenade that offers sweeping views of New York Harbor. The city, which will be primarily responsible for developing and operating the island, said it has already committed $41.5 million to the project."For more information on Governor's Island, how to get there and the activities available on the island check out the website (http://www.govisland.com/).

April is Million Trees Month
Learn more here: Million Trees NYC
Now go get your planting on!
P.S. Million Trees also pointed me towards this article from the New York Times... It might be considered disorderly conduct, but I guess I am just incredibly disorderly. Don't believe me? The scars on my knees and shins from being a kid and climbing every tree I could find will prove it!

24 ways to get on the Water in New York City
24 Great Ways to Get On the Water in NYC (plus a couple of spots in Jersey) Without Your Own Boat is something I've been wanting to blog about since February but I wanted to wait until the weather got a little more seasonable. Sorry to post on a chillier day... I just couldn't wait any longer.
I have been referring back to to Bonnie's post since it went up last year and I love her suggestions. It has been so helpful to me and in general I think her blog is great. I encourage you all to check it out.

Are You a White Water Rafting Junkie?
Personally, I've only been rafting a few times but I loved it every time. I've been rafting in a few different locations but never within three hours of the City.
I recently learned about Urban Sherpa Travel which leads white water rafting trips to the Lehigh River in the Poconos from New York City. Bonus: they provide everything, "rafting equipment, round trip transportation from NYC in a luxury motor coach, shuttle service to/from the river, pre-trip instruction, a river lunch, free use of all the facilities and changing rooms at the Whitewater Challengers Rafting Center, and, of course, experienced river guides for the trip itself."
They have certain designated dam release dates, so sign up early, because I am sure all the other junkies out there are signing up now too.
The company also leads rock climbing, skiing/snowboarding and zip line trips from both New York and Boston. Urban Sherpa's white water rating trip was also recently endorsed by EMS and since the individuals who work for EMS generally really know their stuff I would trust that this is a worth while trip.
Have you been on an Urban Sherpa trip before? If so, would you recommend it? Why/why not?

Port Authority Statement Supports Cycling
Wow, this is HUGE, especially if you are a cyclist. The Century Road Club Association covered the Port Authority of NY/NJ's statement which "called for systematic planning for the incorporation of bicycling in the regional transportation network."
The following is a copy of the Port Authority's statement taken from The Century Road Club Association.
March 29, 2010
On February 25, 2010, the Board of Commissioners adopted the following policy:
In keeping with its mission to meet the critical transportation needs of the bi-state region, the Port Authority supports bicycling as an important and sustainable mode of travel. It seeks to provide its customers, tenants, visitors and employees with safe and convenient bicycle access and secure bicycle parking at its facilities, wherever operationally and financially feasible.
The Board also authorized the Executive Director to take the following steps to advance the goals of this policy:
Integrate improved bicycle access, safe bicycle lanes, and secure bicycle parking and storage into existing Port Authority buildings and facilities, owned or operated by the Port Authority.
Ensure that design guidelines for new construction and major renovations include sufficient bicycle access, storage, and related amenities to meet emerging demand.
Develop multimodal transit hubs that encourage biking and walking.
Remove any unnecessary restrictions on bicycle access, and promote the safe coexistence of motor vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians at Port Authority facilities.
Encourage tenants to expand bicycle access and accommodations.
Coordinate bicycle facility improvements and intermodal connections with regional planning organizations, other regional transportation providers, and local governments to promote safe and seamless travel throughout the region.
I encourage all Port Authority staff to make the most of this opportunity to creatively meet the region’s emerging transportation needs, advance the agency’s environmental commitments and contribute to a more sustainable regional transportation system. We will be able to better serve our customers, foster positive relationships with our communities, and contribute to improved employee health. I look forward to seeing a wide range of plans for meeting these objectives, and to sharing them with the region.
The following is a copy of the Port Authority's statement taken from The Century Road Club Association.

PORT AUTHORITY NEWS BULLETIN
Office of the Executive Director
Bulletin #10-05
March 29, 2010
Bicycling is a rapidly growing mode of transportation and the New York-New Jersey region is facing increased demand for expanded bicycle infrastructure, safer bicycle routes, access to transit connections and secure parking facilities. While we recognize that many Port Authority facilities currently provide some accommodations for bicycle users, we need to prepare more systematically for the growing use of bicycles as a mode of travel within the regional transportation system.
On February 25, 2010, the Board of Commissioners adopted the following policy:
In keeping with its mission to meet the critical transportation needs of the bi-state region, the Port Authority supports bicycling as an important and sustainable mode of travel. Encourage tenants to expand bicycle access and accommodations.
Coordinate bicycle facility improvements and intermodal connections with regional planning organizations, other regional transportation providers, and local governments to promote safe and seamless travel throughout the region.
The Chief Operating Officer, Chief of Capital Planning, and Chief of Real Estate and Development will be responsible for ensuring that the agency takes the preliminary steps necessary to implement this policy and will periodically report to me on the agency’s progress. They will also review interim bicycle master plans and provide final versions for my approval by September 30, 2010. Affected staff will soon receive additional information and guidance from them directly.
Overall I like the initiatives they plan to take and I think that anything to help reduce the use of cars and congestion on the roads is worthy. I wonder when we will see official plans to put these words into action and how long it will take. I hope the Port Authority will work to quickly more forward with these initiatives because, while words are nice, it is action that counts (Please excuse my cynical tone, I am a New Yorker after all and my faith is the Port Authority is not as strong as it could be).

Side Notes: 7 Days Until You Can Have Your Cake and Eat it Too!!!
O.K., O.K. --- you got me, this has nothing to do with being outside... this however does have to do with New York and I am convinced that there will be a direct correlation between your attendance at this event and overall your happiness.
Oh... and yea, its FREE!!!
Cupcake Camp NYC, "an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and eat cupcakes in an open environment." It is taking place next Friday, April 9th from 7:00pm - 9:30pm at Happy Ending, 302 Broome Street. Note this is a 21+ event as it is being held at a bar.You don't have to bake, remember for every dozen baked they need 11 more people to eat them, but bakers are always welcome.
To RSVP to the event click here.
I hope to see you all there!!! And apologies for the extreme detour into the indoor activities arena, but as I am sure you can now understand, this was of critical importance!

High Line's Addition Delayed
Image by: Joel Sternfeld, Courtesy of Highline.org
The second section of the High Line was originally supposed to open in this fall (2010) but, due to a lack of funding the park's opening will be delayed until the spring or summer of 2011.The Park's first section runs from Gansevoort Street to West 20th Street and opened to rave reviews. For more information read Walk the High Line.
According to dnainfo.com: "The park’s second stretch — running from 20th to 30th streets — was slated to open later this year after the initial section debuted last summer." However, due the recession, developing funds has not been as easy as they had hoped it would be. The High Line's construction and maintenance has been largely supported through private funding thus the Park will need more time to fundraise.
While reading the High Line Second Section Opening Pushed Back to 2011 I also noticed the that the park will include a "'great lawn' and a 'woodland tree-top canopy walk'"--- Does it get much cooler than that???
To read the original article click here. And to donate to the High Line park visit www.highline.org.

Know the Law
I came across a great blog, Recreation Law, which discusses interesting law topics and cases related to outdoor recreation law. James Moss, the author, notes that he isn't trying to educate his audience but does list sources to point you in the right direction if you are curious about your rights and responsibilities.
It's a good read and Mr. Moss does review some pretty interesting cases and issues.
Some of the more interesting posts include So I do not plan to die, but I am stupid so the law says I have to spend $500 so you can find my body..., I could not make my son wear a helmet so I’m going to make you wear one and Letter to the Editor: Wilderness and Environmental Medicine.
Overall, I thoroughly support what James Moss is doing... even though he is not trying to educate the public, I think his blog is very informative. I've learned a lot about the current issues in recreation law and even more importantly, I've learned that there is a lot I don't know. Overall, I always support individuals understanding the law, their rights and their responsibilities so Recreation Law will certainly be added to my weekly reading list.

Just for Fun: 10 Reasons to Run in the Rain
1. You can run for miles and miles and have most of the road/trail to yourself.
2. When you come back covered in mud you feel even more hard core than you would after a dry run.
3. When you tell people (specifically non-runners) that you went for a run in bad weather (bonus points if the wind gusts were over 40mph or there were significant downpours) they think you are really committed and even more awesome. They could also just think you're crazy... but that's OK too.
4. You get to puddle jump like when you were a kid… you’re already wet anyway, right?
5. Sweat, what sweat? It's just rain water! ;-)
6. The road has an odd mirrored effect which makes your shadow/reflection look pretty cool.
7. When you do pass the occasional runner or cyclist there is a good chance they will smile at you and you might even get the occasional thumbs up or “Way to go!”
8. You won’t get overheated like your would on a dry day and no need to carry water, just open your mouth towards the sky.
9. You are never tempted to start walking or slow down just to “take a break for a minute”-- You will get to your warm, dry home faster if you speed up (read: brand new personal record).
10. When you get home you have never been happier to have a nice, long, hot shower.
Bonus Reason: You are NOT on the treadmill!*
So get outside, even if it is raining. In fact, enjoy all your outdoor activities in the rain, be they hiking, soccer, baseball, running or just a nice trip outside for puddle jumping.
*Many thanks to Chris M. for the bonus reason!
Calling all Mountain Bikers
Hey Mountain Bikers,
I'd like to direct you to a great blog that has in turn directed me to a lot of good resources... NYC Mountain Bike Blog. I love reading about their weekend rides and they always provide great ideas for future outings... plus kudos to them, they ride in the snow!
Some of the resources I have discovered through this blog are as follows:
The New York City Mountain Bikers Meetup Group - This is a group "for anyone that shares a passion for mountain biking and trail riding." They welcome all levels and offer a great deal of diversity in their rides and locations.
New York City Mountain Bike Association - Founded in 2005 their mission is to build and maintain trails in the five boroughs of New York City, advocate for the sport, and foster a community of mountain bikers in the City. The website has information on trails and other resources.
I encourage you to follow the NYC Mountain Bike Blog and check out the two websites.
Happy Riding!

Side Note: Lily has more facebook friends than you do! (Rainy Day Activity)
Yep, that's right Lily (a black bear) has over 94,000 facebook fans (myself included).
I originally started this blog because because I don't believe there are enough resources out there for people who want to get outside in New York City. But, I also started Outside in New York because I believe that the more people learn about the outside world the more the more they will want to protect our natural resources.... Well, while I am all for getting outside and learning first hand, I am not about to go crawling into a mother bear's den! So I can't think of a better way to learn about these fascinating creatures:
The NABC (www.bear.org) set up a webcam in the Lily’s den in Ely, Minnesota. She gave birth a few weeks ago and there was something of a baby bear pool going on over the date of her whelping (? not sure of the term for bears, going with the term for dogs) and how many cups she would have.
You can watch her and cubs here (link). I warn you it is VERY addictive but also incredibly cute. I love it when her cubs make noise; it is a completely fascinating sound, an odd mix between a dog's bark, horse's whinny, cow's moo and rodent's squeaking.
You can become her facebook fan here (link).
Additionally click (here) if you want to join the NABC and support their mission.

A Race Anyone Can Win
Jack Rabbit Sports (one of my favorite stores) is holding a race on April 13th in Prospect Park that ANYONE can win. That's right anyone... if you run a 6 minute mile or at 12 minute mile, it doesn't matter... we'll all be evenly matched.
Jack Rabbit writes,
Please go and checkout Jack Rabbit's website. This store proved to be a great resource for me when I had just started running. Their staff was always encouraging, welcoming and friendly. Additionally, they were knowledgeable about their products and general resources for runners in and around the city. They are great for runners, cyclists, swimmers, yoga fanatics and general fitness enthusiasts.
Overall, I think this race sounds like a fantastic idea... I'm slow, so this may be my only opportunity to ever win anything. I'm so excited! See you out there!
Jack Rabbit writes,
This race will not be won by the fastest runner, but by the person who knows themselves best. When you register, you need to predict your finishing time. The race will be chip timed, but there will be no clocks on the course and runners are not allowed to wear watches. After the race, you’ll see what your actual finish time was and just how close you came. The people that are closest to their predicted times win.
Because this race is not about speed, we will not have separate categories for men & women or different age groups. Instead, the top 5 most accurate runners will win a $30 coupon to JackRabbit, the next 10 most accurate will win a $20 coupon, and the next 10 most accurate will win a $10 coupon. Winners will receive coupons via email or as a store credit.
The proceeds of this event are going directly to benefit Prospect Park. Instead of printing yet another race tee shirt, we’re going to pool the proceeds from the race and put them towards a project in Prospect Park that will benefit the running community.
Crucial Information: The race will begin and end at the Bartel Prichard lot at the intersection of 15th St and Prospect Park West in Prospect Park at 7:00 p.m. Please plan to arrive no later than 6:45p. Bag drop will be provided. The start is very close to the F train stop at Prospect Park. The race course will be approximately one loop of the park.I love that Jack Rabbit is donating the proceeds of this race to benefit Prospect Park... Personally, while I love race tees, I have enough of them and I always agree with supporting our city's parks. Way to go Jack Rabbit!!
The race is capped at 400 registrants. Online registration will end at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 12th or when the race is full. Online registration is $20 at www.jackrabbitsports.com/anyonecanwin. Pre-race packet pickup will be available at the JackRabbit Union Square store on Monday, April 12th or at the race start beginning at 6:00pm. If space is still available, race evening registration will be $30 on-site.

Calling All Triathletes!
The Multisport World Conference and Expo will be coming to New York City on April 18th, 2010.
The Expo is FREE and open to anyone who likes to complete in triathlons or likes to swim, bike or run. I went last year and really enjoyed it... and I am certainly no cyclist and not a competitive swimmer.
They will be offering seminars on such topics as injury prevention, developing faster running times, and nutrition. There will also be running, swimming and cycling clinics-- I did the running clinic last year and LOVED it. For more information on the clinics click (here) and for more information on the seminars click (here).
The event will also feature two speakers: Troy Jacobson founder of Spinervals and National Director of Endurance Sports Training for Lifetime Fitness, andJordan Metzl, MD, a nationally recognized doctor of Sports Medicine at the Hospital for Special Surgery. For more information on the speakers click (here).
Please also note the USAT Northeast Region Annual Membership meeting will be taking place at the expo.
The expo will take place at the Manhattan Jewish Community Center (JCC) which coincidentally hosts an awesome indoor triathlon each December (a great opportunity for first timers who are a little worried about the open water aspect of triathlons).
The JCC is located at 334 Amsterdam Avenue (at 76th Street) New York, NY 10024
For more information and to register click (here). My best advice is to register early... this event was PACKED last year!
Update (4/17/10): Jordan Metzel will no longer be speaking at Multisport. But they have added many other experts to the web-page including Dr. Paul Weiss, Jordano Quaglia, Dr. Mark Klion, Andrew Kalley, Scott Duke, Peter Duggan, Nicholas Amico, Niel Cook, and Sarah Currie. For more details on the speakers click here.

8 Places to Grab Your Running Gear
Looking for a place to get your running clothes, sneaks or fuel packs?
Check out NYCGO.com and read Runners' Buy: Best NYC Trotting Gear which is complete with a map of all locations.
Personally I love Jack Rabbit sports and Super Runners for their running evaluations and general knowledge of the sport. I also appreciate that at Super Runners when I buy a new pair of sneakers I can try them out for 30 days and return them if they aren't exactly what I need. (Note: Jack Rabbit may have the same policy, I just haven't been told of it.) Additionally, I have also had great success with Asics shoes and therefore enjoy going to their store.
Hope this article helps you find all the equipment and apparel you need for an awesome run!

Side Note
Side Notes is a series I am starting where I will highlight events, deals or places of interest outside of the general Tri-State Area. I am not expecting to post Side Notes in regular intervals... just as I come across things of interest.
I have a friend, Cole, who is in the process of riding 3000 miles down the Eastern Coast in 30 days on his bike. His ride is 100% self supported (no easy feat) in order raise money and create awareness about the Haitian earthquake and the ongoing need for disaster relief.
Cole is currently in the middle of the second week of his four-week ride. He's had some bumps along the way but is doing very well so far. To learn more about his ride and follow him on his journey check out Ride for Haiti.
To Cole: Best wishes for a safe and fulfilling journey and Godspeed!
P.S. If you know of things that should be highlighted in Side Notes please e-mail them to me and I will be sure to get the word out.

Picking a Bike Saddle
I have not had a comfortable ride on a bike since I was 10 years old and my bike was pink with a banana seat and streamers. Yes I adored that bike, she was my baby. Since then I have suffered from the very common numb butt, black and blue marks in places that are truly unmentionable and lots of post ride soreness. To try and remedy the situation I bought a gel bike seat cover which didn't help one little bit ($40 down the drain there). I wore the padded spandex shorts, those just gave me a wedgie (more money thrown away). I figured I was doomed!
So I am sure you can imagine my sheer delight when I came across this article from one of my favorite blogs on how to pick a bike saddle.
If you too have been suffering from... well... how can I put this delicately?... Discomfort... then you will want to check it out!
P.S. When I was checking out the New York State Outdoors Blog I noticed that the NYNJ Trail Conference is looking for people to help clear storm damaged trails. Additionally, if you are out on the trails and see any problems please remember to report the issue to the NYNJ Trail Conference here or to the State Parks Department. By the way, in general this is always a good practice. We want to keep our trails safe for others and free of debris. Please also always remember to pack out what you packed in and pick up anything someone else may have forgotten!

I WANT to do THIS!!!
That post title should read "I WANT to do THIS"-- But I couldn't figure out how to manipulate the font of just one title and not all of them (blogger fail!).
At this point you are probably thinking, "What is this crazy chick ranting about?" Well, if you would hold your horses for just a second I will tell you.
Blog audience, please meet Alley Pond Park Adventure Course. Alley Pond Park Adventure Course, please meet your new biggest fans!
Okay, okay... so some of you may not have fantasies about your dream vacation looking something like an Army Boot Camp on a Greek Island for 6 weeks of hellish workouts in an awesome environment with a smattering of culture here and there. Some of you may not actively look for grueling 18k hikes on you next getaway... but hey, to each their own... and I swear, I'll have you converted in no time at all!
Now I grew up loving high ropes courses and we did them all the time at Camp in the Adirondacks. But if you haven't tried them yet, you really have to! I truly believe there is no better way to build your self confidence, get over fears, develop physical self-awareness and foster trusting relationships with friends. Plus... if you've ever wanted to live like a tree person, this is your chance... they have a zip line!
The Course is open May through November... so May 1, you guys will know where to find me! ;)
P.S. Be sure to check out the Reviews of the Adventure Course on The New York Times's blog City Room and NY1 (links also found at the bottom of the Adventure Course's website). If this post didn't convert you, I bet NY1's video of the "Swing Shot" totally will.

Great article
This is an article I saw a while ago and happened to bookmark mark it...
Check out Undiscovered New York: Getting Sporty for tips on places to kayak, rock climb or boulder and learn how to fly high on a trapeze.
The article is well written and the directions are pretty clear. Its also less than a year old so the article should still be pretty accurate.
Happy reading!
P.S. Congratulations to everyone who completed the NYC Half Marathon this weekend... You are all champions!

Images from this Weekend's Adventures in Central Park
If the Daffodils and Forsythia are out, spring is certainly here.
This dude had pretty awesome (and fast) moves!
The boats were out on the lake. I didn't even think the Boat House would be open for boating this early in the year... apparently I was wrong!
Now for a video quiz:
I saw a game in progress and I have no idea what it is called, so I am soliciting your help because I proved too much of a scaredy-cat (even I'm a little embarrassed that I used that term-- Don't only 8 year-old girls say that?) to go ask them what they were doing. The game involved flinging a ball in a net which was tethered to a rope at each other and either catching it, dodging it or kicking it away.
So does anyone know what this game is called or what the objective is?

Free Macaroon Day!!!!
My reaction when I saw this was simply... "um, WHOA!!" Now if you aren't strolling in the parks, out for hike or don't have another rad activity planned for tomorrow here is an awesome suggestion:
Macaroon Day NYC 2010 -- They have so many different participating locations you could easily enjoy the nice weather by planning a walking tour between some of the best pastry shops in the city! And hey, if you are participating in all that hiking, cycling, running, walking and adventuring you are going to needs your strength... Macaroons might just provide the sugary boost you seek! It looks like supplies might be limited so get there early.
And if you haven't ever tried a Macaroon before... you REALLY need to. I highly recommend the rose macaroons from either Madeleine or Maison du Chocolat. And yes, I have been told in the past that the ones from Maison du Chocolat are made from the same recipe as the ones in Paris. YUM
And as of tomorrow at 1:32 PM-- HAPPY SPRING

Hiking in the woods+ walking distance from Manhattan+sweeping views of the Hudson River... Does it exist?
Oh yes it does exist and and your options are called the Palisades Long Path and the Palisades Short Trail!!! There are multiple trail options for every level of difficulty.
The route goes from George Washington Bridge, north up to the Palisades which offer sweeping views the Hudson River and excellent vista points.
The New Jersey Palisades website has all the information you will need including detailed trail maps, access points, restroom locations and picnic areas.
To walk across the GWB, check out this website. It is also possible to take public transportation, for more information click here.
For more information on the Long Path and how to take it all the way up to Albany, check out the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference.
So with the great weather forecast for this weekend, I hope you'll check it out! Plus with no foliage on the trees yet, you are sure to have phenomenal views!

Spring Skiing
So my inbox has been flooded with info on Spring Skiing (best time of year to ski, in my opinion).
For all you boarders out there Stratton's (my favorite mountain) half pipe competition is going on now!
The e-mail reads: The first 50 carpoolers on Friday and Sunday and the first 100 carpoolers on Saturday will receive US Open freebies. For more info on the competition, lodging or trail conditions check out Stratton's Website.
Okemo is also running specials: Winter Wildlife and Moonlit Snowshoe Tours. Discover footprints from our furry friends at 1 pm and 3 pm, or enjoy the night sky and a little adventure at 5 pm and 7 pm. $20 for adults, $15 for ages 12 & under. Reservations are required. (802) 228-1419. Check the online calendar for more information and other cool events!
But perhaps the best deal is local: Bellearye Mountain is running Flex Sundays, $20/$10 Wednesdays have been extended as well as Fridays are $25 Customer Appreciation Days!
Hope you are enjoying the early spring weather and have a chance to get out there while we've still got some snow!

Looking for a Place to Park Your Bike?
So in honor of everyone wears green day, I thought I would share an awesome tip from Transportation Alternatives (a really worthy and important organization) to help make living a greener life a little easier. Because not everyone is allowed to take your bike inside buildings or restaurants and you might not want to chain your bike to the nearest parking sign, Transportation Alternatives has been kind enough to compile a list of bike parking garages all over the city.
For your convenience I have copied the list below, but please go and check out the original list here.
Manhattan
85 4th Ave (at 10th St.) - Secure bike room $25 per month
888 Eighth Avenue (at 53rd Street) - $10 per 10 hours
J & S Rent-A-Locker, 147 W. 35th Street (b/w Broadway amd 7th ave) - $5 per day
105 Essex Street (b/w Delancey and Rivington)
80 Pine Street (West side of Water Street b/w Pine and Maiden)
Best Parking, 310 W. 40th Street (b/w 8th and 9th) - $15 per hour
Central Parking, 224 Mulberry Street (b/w Prince and Spring) - $40 per month
Chelnik Parking, 200 E. 27th Street (at 3rd Avenue) - $6.50 per hour, $206 per month
Chelnik Parking, 425 Park Avenue (at 55th Street) - $23 per hour
FastPark, 49 W. 38th Street (at 9th Avenue) - $20 per day
Gallant Parking, 182 E. 95th Street (at 3rd Avenue) - $21 per day
Impark, 55 Water Street (south of William Street) - $30 per month for non-tenants
Kinney System, 345 W. 58th Street (at 8th Avenue) - $37 per day, $16 per hour
Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 5th Avenue (at 82nd Street) - open during museum hours
Brooklyn -Currently there are no garages listed in Brooklyn.
The Bronx
Jerome Avenue at Gun Hill Road
Jerome Avenue at 190th Street
Queens
Court Square (near Jackson Ave.)
90th Avenue (bet. Parsons Blvd. & 160th Street)
Archer Ave. at 165th Street
Queens Borough Hall
Queens Plaza South at Jackson Avenue
They don't list any for Brooklyn... but I have a feeling there must be at least one or two there and they also don't list any for Staten Island. Does anyone know of any garages either in Brooklyn or on Staten Island? Or do you know of any that aren't listed on Transportation Alternatives website?
That's all for now folks! I hope everyone has a chance to go outside and enjoy the day! Don't forget to wear your green, go watch the St. Patrick's Day Parade (on Fifth from 42nd to 86th Streets, from 11am-4pm), and enjoy the unseasonably warm weather we have been given.
Happy St. Partick's Day Everyone!

RunAMuck-NY
So I heard about this very cool mud race the other day while I was in Super Runners Shop (my second home at this point in time) and then I started to see it advertised everywhere. It looks like a lot of fun!
The RunAMuck race takes place outside of New York City, in Harriman State Park, but they do provide bus service for those New Yorkers who do not have their own transportation.
Frankly, I am strongly considering doing the race. Some of the best times I can remember from childhood were playing in the swamp at camp. Combining my love for mud and a trail race, with good music and beer and wine to follow, what could be better? I hope some of you will consider joining me!

Brooklyn Bridge Park will be Completed!!!! :)
According to the New York Times, New York State has agreed to allow the completion of Brooklyn Bridge Park in DUMBO. Only a few small portions of the park are completed at this time, and each year more areas are expected to open.
This picture, courtesy of The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy, is of part of the park that is currently open. Having worked in DUMBO I can promise that this area is a wonderful place to go for a walk or to eat your lunch. If you are looking for gorgeous views and a little hint of nature I highly recommend going to the area called The Cove, which is right between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.
This spring the Park is expected to make13 new acres available to the public with the openings on Piers 1 and 6. The New York Times also notes that Pier 2 is expected to open, which would be designed for sports, though I was unable to find any information on Pier 2 on the Park's website. Please note, that the Empire-Fulton Ferry location is currently closed for renovations, and plans to reopen in spring 2011.
If you do plan on taking a stroll through the Park, I highly recommend stopping by the Ice Cream Factory, located at 1 Water Street, it is absolutely delicious!

March Showers Bring April Flowers?
Hmm... not quite right, but maybe all this rain will make spring come early this year.
And because it is never too early to start planning for spring and Cherry Blossom season is right around the corner.... Start planning your visit to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden now. Its a great place to go for a walk, explore and learn about some pretty cool plants.
For now, I hope you are all enjoying your puddle jumping adventures!

I don't know about you.... but I do! They look like a fun bunch!
New York Road Runners Club is sponsoring Scotland Week which starts on April 3, 2010 with the Scotland Run! The race is a 10K in Central Park and is a qualifier for the Marathon in 2011.
NYRR also mentions that there will opportunities to win some pretty cool prizes such as "trips to Scotland and luxury gifts." They also promise that "the post-race festival promises tasty Scottish fare and live entertainment." --- I really hope this means bagpipes!!!!

One of my Favorite Stores
Way to go New York Magazine for giving one of my favorite stores an awesome review!
In New York Magazines Best of 2010 issue they reviewed Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) as a great place to buy camping gear:
So I'll leave you to explore EMS's website, read more of New York Magazine's Best of 2010 and check out EMS's Soho location at 530 Broadway which is near Spring Street. Happy shopping!

"EMS almost tripled its floor space when it opened this sprawling new store last spring, meaning there’s now ample room to display the kayaks, ice picks, tents, and backpacks that promise outdoor adventure. But it’s certainly not the only outfitter in town—Paragon has breadth of gear, while Patagonia has high-tech clothes. What distinguishes EMS is the passion and expertise of its staff, all avid outdoorspeople. You need a water filter for a camping trip? They’ll ask about the details of the trip, then walk you through the merits of each one and never try to up-sell you. Chances are they’ve already hiked/biked/camped wherever you’re going, so you might want to get some tips before you check out."I couldn't agree more with New York Magazine's review found here. Every time I go into an EMS, whether it be in upstate New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut or here in town, I am struck by how much their employees care about outfitting you with the best gear and at the most reasonable price possible (and yes, EMS is much cheaper than REI, Paragon or Patagonia). Their staff members also genuinely participate in outdoor activities and they always have great suggestions when I ask for new and exciting ideas.

Call to Action- Don't Let Our State Parks Close!
As a child I went away to camp in the Adirondacks every summer. While there, I developed a strong appreciation for our national and state parks, they are one of this country's and this state's greatest resources.
Lately, some troubling news has come out of Albany, the State plans to close 41 state parks along with 14 historic sites. Now, any outdoor enthusiast would be troubled by this news, but for me, with so many wonderful memories tied to these plots of precious preserved land, the news is particularly upsetting.
I will be contacting my state representative to urge her to fight to keep the parks open and I encourage you to do the same! To learn how to contact your state representative or to find out who your state representative is you may do so at the NY State Assembly website.
If you would like to read more about the issue, you may do so here:

Times Union -lists the parks expected to close
For now, I will leave you with a picture of Adirondack State Park... a type of beauty and unassuming majesty that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

Blog Botox
You may have noticed I have given my blog a bit of a mini face lift. I've decided that since we've had a bit of spring-like weather lately the blog should reflect it. This is a picture I took a few years ago in early April, just the buds were starting to form on the trees.
Enjoy the early spring we are getting this year!

Cool Tool- Map My Run
Hey Everyone!
Sorry I've been MIA for a few days... a nasty stomach bug took me out.
Before I got my Garmin one of the hardest things for me to do was track the distance of my runs accurately. That is until I stumbled upon this fun tool, Map My Run. It was one of the easiest tools to learn to use. Although it can be slow to load and a little finicky at times, I found those drawbacks to be well worth it as it is FREE and works everywhere that Google Maps works (read: even on trails in Upstate NY or CT).
So if you don't have a Garmin, Polar, or iPhone try this tool out and I hope it helps you in your workouts.

It also lists favorite routes of people in your neighborhood and in the city (for an example, see the above image). This is also great if you are a cyclist and looking to measure your distance. So if you don't have a Garmin, Polar, or iPhone try this tool out and I hope it helps you in your workouts.

Walk the High Line
March has begun and the weather is getting warmer... spring seems to be arriving. This weekend's highs are predicted to be in the upper 40's, so take the opportunity to get outside and enjoy the sunshine. Now, I assume most of you have heard about the High Line which runs from Gansevoort Street to 20th Street between 10th and 11th. There are even entry points to the park if you can't manage the stairs. This is a great flat walk with fantastic views of the City, the River and New Jersey.
Sadly they don't allow dogs. There are also no bikes, skateboards or skates allowed.... however, this also makes for a very calm and relaxing promenade.
For more information check out The High Line's Website.

Round and Round and Round in the Circle Game
Last year New York Magazine did an excellent write up of ten New York City skating rinks, and I wanted to get this post up while the rinks had a chance of maintaining some ice.
The article lists prices for admission and skate rentals as well as reviews each rink. Check out the Joy of Going in Circles.
Personally, my favorites are: Wollman Rink (Central Park) and Lasker Rink... though I am dying to try the fake ice at the Museum of Natural History.
Which rinks have you tried and enjoyed the most? What other rinks do you know of that the article doesn't mention?
Happy skating!

Fractions of a Second
So like most New Yorkers, my Sunday morning tradition consists of reading The Times. Not being a morning person, I often read the Sunday Times online. This morning they had a particularly cool feature, especially cool if you are a fan of the Olympics. And really what outdoor enthusiast isn't a fan of the Olympics?
So check out this interactive feature Fractions of a Second: An Olympic Musical. Being a former alpine racer I loved listening to the finishing times. The feature really makes one realize how phenomenal these athletes are and how tight each competition really is!

Parks Department Advises New Yorkers to be Careful
Well since the Parks Department has advised New Yorkers to be careful, to stay away from tall trees weighed down by 17 inches of heavy wet snow, after a man died in Central Park yesterday and another tree paralyzed a bus along 5th Avenue, I thought you might all be looking for indoor activities.
Here is a great site that lists indoor climbing gyms all over New York State. So if you are feeling the need to get out of the snow today and powder up your hands and hit the wall, check out this resource and report back about the quality of the gyms you try.
This site also lists places to climb in New York City, both indoor and outdoor. That's right, not only does the cite list climbing gyms but it lists climbs in the City's parks for when the weather gets nicer. How cool is that? Check it out here.
For those of you who have already been out there.... Which gyms do you regularly visit in NYC? Which gyms are above and beyond? Which ones need some work?

City Snow Report
"100% chance of fresh snow" over the next two days says the National Weather Service!!!
You'll have to forgive me if I go a little overboard with the exclamation points. I get very excited when snow is in the forecast!
Given the warmer temperatures, it looks as if this snow will be excellent for all your snowball and snowman making pursuits. It also looks promising for those of you who are more into sliding, skiing and sledding.
So get out there, report back with fun pictures of the day, and enjoy the white stuff!

Grabbing gear online, the way to go!
So one of the questions my friends in the city are constantly asking me is, "Where should I buy my outdoor gear?" It is not too easy in the City to find great places that have the specific outdoor gear items you are looking for, especially at a reasonable price. This becomes even more true if you looking for more technical items such as climbing shoes and rope or say a kayaking skirt. Of course there is Paragon Sports on 18th and Broadway, a plethora of Models locations and a few other specialty shops. But if those stores don't have what you are looking for, you can be somewhat out of luck.
A fantastic solution? Backcountry.com and their outlet store.
They sell everything from tents, to cycling clothes, to snow boots, to skis and snowboards, to car racks. Their customer service is great, shipping is inexpensive, they have a lot of different brands and options to choose from and they have a lenient return policy, which is always helpful when ordering by mail.
So checkout Backcountry.com out and let me know what you think.
